Your Tax Dollars at Work: Torture At Gitmo

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- An Algerian prisoner at Guantanamo Bay has accused his guards of using [water torture] on him, his lawyer said Friday, marking the first allegation that the harsh interrogation technique was used at the U.S. military base.

A human rights commission of the Organization of American States, after being informed of the alleged abuse, said Friday that it has asked the U.S. State Department to ensure that Djamel Ameziane is not mistreated and receives medical care.

Officials at Guantanamo and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but they have said repeatedly that all Guantanamo detainees are treated humanely.

Ameziane, who has been imprisoned at Guantanamo since February 2002 without being charged with crimes, told his lawyer Wells Dixon that guards at the base placed a water hose between his nose and mouth and ran it for several minutes. Ameziane said they repeated the procedure several times, nearly suffocating him.

"I had the impression that my head was sinking in water," Ameziane, 41, wrote his lawyer. "I still have psychological injuries, up to this day. Simply thinking of it gives me the chills."

According to Ameziane's account, during the same incident the guards applied pepper spray all over his body, hosed him down, and left him shackled and shivering in wet clothes in front of an air conditioner in an interrogation room.

Confessed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and at least two other "high-value" detainees imprisoned at the base in southeast Cuba were waterboarded -- an interrogation tactic that produces the sensation of drowning -- but they were waterboarded at CIA secret prisons before they were transferred to Guantanamo.

Dixon said in a telephone interview the alleged abuse happened early during Ameziane's confinement at Guantanamo.

"He was held down and someone essentially shoved a hose in his face, forcing a stream of water down his nose, mouth and into his lungs I guess," Dixon said.

Lawyers with the Center for Constitutional Rights, a law group that represents scores of Guantanamo detainees, on Aug. 6 filed a petition on behalf of Ameziane with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Washington, asking that it intercede with the U.S. to protect the detainee.

The group said the commission, which is an autonomous organ of the OAS, agreed and issued "urgent precautionary measures" with the U.S. on Wednesday.

An official with the OAS-affiliated group confirmed it has asked the State Department to ensure he is treated humanely, given medical treatment and not transferred to a country where he could be tortured.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is empowered to request that a member state adopt specific "precautionary measures" to prevent human rights abuses, but can also urge the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to order that measures be taken, and can submit cases to the court. The United States is a member of the OAS.

Lock 'Em Up At Gitmo, and Throw Away the Key (Along With the Constitution Which Is Just A Piece of Paper)

GITMO DETAINEES SUBJECT TO DETENTION EVEN IF ACQUITTED

Some detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba will likely never be released because of the danger they pose, and those tried and acquitted will still be subject to continued detention as enemy combatants, a Pentagon spokesman said Tuesday.

Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, made the remarks as Salim Hamdan, a Yemeni, awaited a verdict in the first war crimes trial to be held under a special regime created for "war on terror" suspects.

Morrell said Hamdan, a former driver of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, could appeal the verdict in US courts.

"But in the near term, at least, we would consider him an enemy combatant and still a danger and would likely still be detained for some period of time thereafter," he said.

Morrell said there were plans for at least 20 more such trials at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba but he said a significant portion of the detainees being held there would neither be tried nor released.

He said efforts were being made to reduce the size of the population through transfers of prisoners to their home countries for incarceration or release.

"But I think, you know, there are still a significant population within Guantanamo who will likely never be released because of the threat they pose to the world, for that matter," he said.

Yes, Hitler's driver, too, was a horrible threat to world peace. As is the whole concept of the um, rule of law.

Contemptible Rove Cited For Contempt of Congress

So, does this mean that there is a God?

House Judiciary Committee votes to cite former White House aide Rove for contempt of Congress

A House panel voted Wednesday to cite Karl Rove, formerly President Bush's top aide, for contempt of Congress as its Senate counterpart explored punishment for alleged misdeeds by other administration officials.

But it was not clear that the Democrats controlling a lame-duck Congress will push their case for abuse of power against a lame-duck president beyond televised talk and vague threats just a few weeks shy of final adjournment. As a practical matter, lawmakers have little time and less willingness to follow through on most charges, let alone punishments, before Bush leaves office.

They're finding plenty of time and political purpose, however, for public reviews of what Democrats say is the abuse of power and politicization across the Bush administration. Rove and the Justice Department starred in Wednesday's proceedings.

No, maybe not.

Department of No F*cking Comment

Yet another atrocity to document. Weary-making, it is.

IN A WAR RIDDLED WITH LIES, PVT. LAVENA JOHNSON "COMMITTED SUICIDE" AND "WAS NOT BRUTALLY RAPED AND MURDERED" We Don't Agree.

by Meg White

"They don't care. They put on a uniform and they say honor and integrity and they have no morals, no honor and no integrity, and I don't even know how to sleep at night.
--Linda Johnson, mother of Pvt. LaVena Johnson

Pvt. LaVena Johnson, 19, was so excited to tell her mother that she was definitely going to be home from Iraq for Christmas, her favorite time of year. The next day, she was dead.

The military's casualty liaison told the Johnson family she committed suicide, found dead in her barracks with a gunshot wound to the head. However, two separate contacts told LaVena's father, Dr. John Johnson, that she was found dead in a contractor's tent. Allegedly, a trail of blood led from the contractor's tent into her tent, suggesting she was dragged there. Her tent was lit on fire, according to the witness who found her body.

More here.

Still more via Jesus' General. I knew about the KBR rape case, hadn't heard about this one. Which contractor was it, this time? So good to spread the American way of life overseas, is it not?

What Goes Around Comes Around: Rummy, Dirty Bush, Big Dick Recycle Commie Brainwashing at Gitmo

This is a nice story.

It's the kind of actual in-depth journalism that, had the NY Times been so doing all along, one wouldn't still be thinking of the New York Times as belonging to the media whore media.

The cool thing is that Rummy/Dirty Bush's 21st century All-American torture techniques were originally designed by their original designers TO ELICIT FAKE CONFESSIONS.

Haha.

I mean, really, hahaha.
WASHINGTON — The military trainers who came to Guantánamo Bay in December 2002 based an entire interrogation class on a chart showing the effects of “coercive management techniques” for possible use on prisoners, including “sleep deprivation,” “prolonged constraint,” and “exposure.”

What the trainers did not say . . . was that their chart had been copied verbatim from a 1957 Air Force study of Chinese Communist techniques used during the Korean War to obtain confessions, many of them false, from American prisoners.

The recycled chart is the latest and most vivid evidence of the way Communist interrogation methods that the United States long described as torture became the basis for interrogations both by the military at the base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Sayin' It Don't Make It So. (well unless you say it 3x thats different)

What is it about the Unique Power of Three?

Third time's a charm? Three's a crowd?

Is it the short form of the Big Lie?

Well, way back in my days with the Women's International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell (had I forgotten to mention that, dear?) the mantric formula for membership consisted of a three-fold chant -- "I am a W.I.T.C.H., I am a W.I.T.C.H., I am a W.I.T.C.H.! -- and poof! The deed was doned.

Who knows, but there is certainly something very special about three if you're a Bushist fascist with the Great Egg of Torture all over your face (and what's that other sticky stuff there, dear? No dont tell me.).

If one asserts a fact thrice, it becometh fact, for those who create their own realitiez.

Except, some uppity judges think that that's really stupid.

They're so uppity they make, like, literary references 'n stuf.

As in --

The Hunting of the Snark

"Just the place for a Snark!" the Bellman cried,
As he landed his crew with care;
Supporting each man on the top of the tide
By a finger entwined in his hair.

"Just the place for a Snark! I have said it twice:
That alone should encourage the crew.
Just the place for a Snark! I have said it thrice:
What I tell you three times is true."

From AP:

The three-member court was particularly pointed in its criticism of the argument that says s evidence is reliable because it appears multiple times.

"The government insists that the statements made in the documents are reliable because the State and Defense Departments would not have put them in intelligence documents were that not the case. This comes perilously close to saying that whatever the government says must be treated as true.

Lewis Carroll notwithstanding, the fact that the government 'said it thrice' does not make an allegation true."

COURT: GITMO LOGIC NONSENSE

Does this mean someone's starting to wake up from the long Bushist fascist nightmare? God, one hopes so.

Rummy, Cheney, Bushist Fascists: Torture Gets Them Hard, Says Beaver (no, I'm not making this up)

Why aren't all the members of the pro-torture crowd safely rotting in jail?
On Tuesday, December 2 2002, Donald Rumsfeld signed a piece of paper that changed the course of history. That same day, President Bush signed a bill to put the Pentagon in funds for the next year. The US faced unprecedented challenges, Bush told a large and enthusiastic audience, and terror was one of them. The US would respond to these challenges, and it would do so in the "finest traditions of valour". And then he signed a large increase in the defence budget.

Elsewhere in the Pentagon, an event took place for which there was no comment, no fanfare. With a signature and a few scrawled words, Rumsfeld reneged on the tradition of valour to which Bush had referred. Principles for the conduct of interrogation, dating back more than a century to President Lincoln's famous instruction of 1863 that "military necessity does not admit of cruelty", were discarded. He approved new and aggressive interrogation [torture] techniques that would produce devastating consequences.

I don't know why they're not safely rotting away in jail.
[Staff Judge Advocate Lt. Col. Diane] Beaver recalled that smothering was thought to be particularly effective, and that [Major General Michael E.] Dunlavey, who'd been in Vietnam, was in favour because he knew it worked.

The younger men would get particularly agitated, excited even: "You could almost see their dicks getting hard as they got new ideas." A wan smile crossed Beaver's face. "And I said to myself, you know what, I don't have a dick to get hard. I can stay detached."

Beaver confirmed what Dunlavey had told me, that a delegation of senior lawyers came down to Guantánamo well before the list of techniques was sent up to Washington. They talked to the intelligence people, they even watched some interrogations. The message from the visitors was that they should do "whatever needed to be done", meaning a green light from the very top - from the lawyers for Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the CIA.

I hope they begin rotting away in jail very soon, and for a very very long time.

Second KBR Rape Case Surfaces: More of the Vile Same

What do the pro-rape crowd and the pro-torture crowd have in common?

Besides the syllable "pro"? And besides both promoting suffering? The suffering of others.

Both the pro-rape crowd and the pro-torture crowd are medievalist.

Medievalists reject modern concepts like the rule of law, human rights, working for the common good, honesty, decency, and so so.

Al Qaeda is medievalist. So are the fundamentalists of Iran. Rightwing crackpot "Christians" are medievalist. They emphasize the "eye for an eye" Old Testament while conveniently ignoring the actual teachings of Jesus. They're part of the Golden Rule: NOT crowd.

So, we're not surprised about selfish, greedy, sexist, murdering, raping, gang-raping power and control freaks like KBR, Halliburton, Blackwater, etc. going into hysterics and then acting out their internal hysteria in the real world.

It's the medievalism, stupid!!

The Pro-Torture Crowd of Dirty Bush: Feckless, Reckless & Lawless. Completely Out of Control

Oh my.

All those CIA torture pictures got "disappeared." Oh myomy.

In fact, they hardly even existed at all.

And even if they did exist, which they did not, they showed only things like Valerie Plame's identity, which the White House must protect at all costs. Or Al-Qaeda might sue us. Or something. Or it might show ways to hold your breath so long that waterboarding wouldn't drown somebody. Like showing pictures of putting bamboo slivers under someone's fingernails will show them how to make that not hurt so much that it makes them want to die, which is the actual point of torture, or did we forget about that part silly silly me.

So it's not about destruction of evidence.

What. You don't believe me?

You think that, um, destroying evidence = consciousness of guilt?

NO way.

Not in Bubble Boy's universe.

"Suffer the little children to come unto me?"

Nah.

Let's let the little children who come unto me suffer.

Yes, let's tie children to our motor vehicles with ropes and drag them in the dirt on their stomachs in Jesus' name to show our little children the wonder of His love.

ARP Poll: Scooter "OJ" Libby's Get Out of Jail Free Card Does Not Sit Well With American Public: 45% Support Impeachment of Bush

ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.

--George Orwell, Animal Farm.

Bet Bubble Boy never thought he'd see these numbers.

Poll: Impeachment talk gains steam after Libby move

A bad week for President Bush may foreshadow a dismal political season, as the president’s poll numbers plummet, Republicans abandon his Iraq policy and he faces a nascent censure and impeachment movement.

A new survey by the American Research Group found that only 31 percent of respondents approve of the president’s commutation of former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby’s prison sentence. The study by the private New Hampshire-based polling company canvassed 1,100 Republicans, Democrats and Independents from July 3-5, finding 64 percent disapproved of the commutation and 5 percent were undecided.

The president commuted the sentence Monday, saying the 2 years imposed last month on Libby, who was found guilty of perjury and obstructing justice in a case linked to the Iraq war, was “excessive.”

The commutation has sparked a firestorm on Capitol Hill.

Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Fla.), who has drafted a resolution to censure Bush, said the president’s “intervention is an unconscionable abuse of authority by George W. Bush, and Congress must step forward and express the disgust that Americans rightfully feel toward this contemptible decision.”

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has scheduled hearings Wednesday on the commutation. The hearings will include pardons made by Clinton, former President Bush and possibly other past presidents.

Those hearings may be the least of the White House’s problems.

The ARG poll found a remarkable 45 percent in favor of the U.S. House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Bush.

In Los Angeles, a storefront “impeachment headquarters” emblazoned with American flags opened July 4. Activists who gathered to open the center accuse the Bush administration of condoning torture, spying on Americans and misleading citizens about the war in Iraq. They also were angry at the president’s decision to commute Libby’s sentence.

“Isn’t it ironic that Paris Hilton will spend more days in jail than Libby?” said Byron De Lear, a Green Party activist.

The White House declined to comment on the impeachment poll, the latest bad news for a president who has seen his public opinion standings dragged to record lows by the unpopular war in Iraq. A Newsweek poll puts Bush’s approval rating at 26 percent.

Dirty Bush Springs Convicted Felon Libby, Demonstating Typical Bushist Fascist Total Contempt for the Rule of Law

Sickening.

Completely sickening.

Arguably the most morally disgusting thing that Dirty Bush has ever done.

(And there's so much competition in this category, is there not?)

It's Bushist Fascist Jury Nullification.

Sort of like Bushist Fascist Geneva Conventions Nullification. And Bushist fascist Habeas Corpus Nullification.

Which leads to the overriding principle, Bushist Fascist Abiding-by-Law Nullification. Which sends an important message to our young people!

If you work for Bushist fascists, you can commit crimes with impunity!

And what a spin Bubble Boy put on his Scooter Libby "Get Out of Jail Free" "Free DC' sParis Hilton!" moment -- criticizing the sentence itself as "excessive," though the sentence is well within federal guidelines, and was imposed by a Bush-appointed Republican judge.

No, Preznit Toad-Exploder prefers the "slap on the wrist" punishment for cronies, whilst happily (like the true pro-life pro-torture Oedipally-challenged narcissistic monger of war killing 600K+ beings he is) frying many many other felons, like Karla Faye Tucker and assorted retarded persons.

Responding to the Rove-spin is Prosecutor Fitzgerald:
We comment only on the statement in which the President termed the sentence imposed by the judge as "excessive."

The sentence in this case was imposed pursuant to the laws governing sentencings which occur every day throughout this country.

In this case, an experienced federal judge considered extensive argument from the parties and then imposed a sentence consistent with the applicable laws.

It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals. That principle guided the judge during both the trial and the sentencing.

Bubble Boy has no interest in the rule of law, for he is Deciderer Emperor (sans clothes) of the Bushist Fascist Animal Farm.

Where "All Animals Are Created Equal -- But Some Are More Equal Than Others."

Why Sadism Matters (For Those Who Slept Through That Part of Sunday School)

Why Sadism Matters: sadism matters because we live in a country so morally disabled that it is, sadly, not unreasonable to state the obvious, e.g., that sadism matters, since apparently some Americans need higher education on this point.

God knows why. (And remember, I'm Buddhist).

We could start with Cheney and Rummy and Preznit Toad-Exploder, but let's start with Romney, because it's a nice day and he has such white teeth.

Sure, they're calling him "Mutt Romney" now.

Some Bushist fascists think that's really mean.

I bet Ann Coulter thinks it's really mean.

Others disagree.

"I'll admit that I'm coming from a dog-centric point of view," Tucker Carlson, the conservative pundit, said Thursday on MSNBC. "But I'm feeling that maybe Mitt Romney lost my vote here. Do you need to be a PETA member to be disturbed by the fact that this guy put a dog on the roof of his car?"

[And left the dog there for a 12 hour trip, briefly stopping after the dog shat himself in fear, and the Romney sons became disturbed by the smelly crap all over their nice vehicle, so there was a crap cleanup.
"As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ''Dad!'' he yelled. ''Gross!'' A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who'd been riding on the roof in the wind for hours."

No one was disturbed by the dog's state. The dog went back in its cage on the top of the car, and back riding at 60 mph. There was no room in the car for the dog. They were too poor to make other arrangements?

Romney still asserts the dog loved it. Battered women too, like to get beat. That's why they're asking for it.]

Some Bushist fascists think it doesn't matter what happens to a stupid dog, anyhow. It's not as if they're embryos, after all.

Or miscarried fetuses, feti that could be put up on the family wall like Rick Santorum did, to more deeply feel the grieving process.

And we know by now that if there was a burning building with a nursery school full of 20 live kids and a medical center with 20,000 frozen embryos, the Bushist fascist hero, unwilling to risk his own skin, would bribe some poor person to run in and save all the widdle snowfwakes first.

Still other people think that, you know, what with "Christian" James Dobson belt-beating his own dog and then bragging about it, advocating whipping toddlers with real whips, and young George W. Bush torturing frogs, old George W. Bush starting wars to get back at his Dad, and old Big Dick Cheney torturing people (and Rummy torturing them, too, let's not forget about him), and all the people who are only following orders torturing people, yes, other people think that there's a theme here.

The Culture of Cruelty.

This profound philosophical view consists of the following belief:

It's ok that other beings suffer.

Thus: family doggie shits himself in fear?

So what?

Family doggie howls in pain?

So what?

Frogs explode when lit firecracker explodes?

So what?

Wounded troops can't get cared for?

So what?

Katrina victims drown?

So what?

600K+ dead in Iraq?

So what?

.
.
Picture of Not Mitt Romney's Dog.

(Oh, and President has the most sustained level of rejection by the American public ever?

So what?)

Big Dick In Big Denial of Big Trouble

John Dean, who knows something about why Presidents and Vice-Presidents might need to resign, has an opinion on Sadist-In-Chief, Big Dick Cheney, and explains it, here.

I'm still enjoying Big Dick's flight away from the Executive Branch into the Legislative Branch in order to avoid trouble.

Oh -- but if he's not part of the Executive Branch, doesn't that mean he no longer can hide under the shield of Executive Privilege?

Oh right. Woops.

Thus followeth Big Dick's flight away from the Legislative Branch back to the Executive.

So, let's review.

He flunked out of Yale.

He's a coward draft-dodger.

He's a tricky Dick suck-up.

"Make Room for Some Bushist Fascists" -- How the Neo-Commies Infiltrated Our Government, Destroying Democracy From Within

From the Washington Post:

Karen Stevens, Tovah Calderon and Teresa Kwong had a lot in common. They had good performance ratings as career lawyers in the Justice Department's civil rights division.

And they were minority women transferred out of their jobs two years ago -- over the objections of their immediate supervisors -- by Bradley Schlozman, then the acting assistant attorney general for civil rights.

Schlozman ordered supervisors to tell the women that they had performance problems or that the office was overstaffed.

But one lawyer, Conor Dugan, told colleagues that the recent Bush appointee had confided that his real motive was to "make room for some good Americans" in that high-impact office, according to four lawyers who said they heard the account from Dugan.

In another politically tinged conversation recounted by former colleagues, Schlozman asked a supervisor if a career lawyer who had voted for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a onetime political rival of President Bush, could still be trusted.

Ooh. Worried that the McCain-voting right-wing conservative lawyer just might not be Bushist fascist enough, eh?

At Abu Ghraib, Rummy & All The Bushist Fascists Got Away With Murder (And They're Still Getting Away With It)

America has two great fake journalists: Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Apparently, America only has one actual journalist.

That would be Sy Hersh.

The General’s Report

"The President had to be aware of this.”

[General Taguba] said that Rumsfeld, his senior aides, and the high-ranking generals and admirals who stood with him as he misrepresented what he knew about Abu Ghraib had failed the nation.

“From the moment a soldier enlists, we inculcate loyalty, duty, honor, integrity, and selfless service,” Taguba said. “And yet when we get to the senior-officer level we forget those values. I know that my peers in the Army will be mad at me for speaking out, but the fact is that we violated the laws of land warfare in Abu Ghraib.

We violated the tenets of the Geneva Convention.

We violated our own principles and we violated the core of our military values. The stress of combat is not an excuse, and I believe, even today, that those civilian and military leaders responsible should be held accountable.” ♦

Libby's Unpardonable Offenses

Bushist fascist utter contempt for the rule of law takes a deep nose-dive into just "How Low Can You Go?" limbo-land.

(WaPo here.)

(One can only imagine the revulsion honorable conservative William F. Buckley, Jr. (who is unable to turn in his grave, not yet being dead) must feel to see the National Review crawling on its belly for a slimy pardon, calling for Bubble Boy's slimy mercy for Big Dick/Ming the Merciless' right-hand hatchetman, Scooter "What kind of a name is that for a grown man?" Libby.

And all those nauseating letters puffing off this supposed virtues, all in support of no jail time for him? Feh.

Libby's such a good smart loyal public servant, but he's above the law of the land? It's ok when Libby obstructs justice?

Sure it's OK! It's his country, his rules, his everything.

That's what Bushist fascist sociopathic megalomania is all about.

What America needs is not more megalomania, but less truthiness and more truth.

What America needs to heal is the name of the traitor who outed a covert CIA officer and thus lost all associated humint assets.

So, sure, screw jail time for Scooter, just send him to Gitmo.
