Obama & the Equal Rights Amendment

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

I had almost forgotten about the ERA, first proposed in 1923. I knew it hadn't been added as an Amendment to the Constitution, but somehow it had slipped out of sight.

Turns out that 38 states need to approve the Equal Rights Amendment.

35 States have already done so.

That means there are only 3 states to go, from among these 15: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia.

Surely Florida is ready to ratify. And Illinois. Arkansas is close.

Maybe it's time for Obama to put his money where his mouth is -- and pledge to get the ERA ratified.

That would be a good place to start, if we're still trying to save poor lil' Unity Pony with her big round sad eyes and two broken ankles, lying in ICU on a respirator, struggling, wheezing with COPD. She might have a bit of Ebola, too, I'm thinking that's blood there, not glitter, on her cute cotton-candy pink mane.

I had almost deleted all of my political-blog bookmarks and given up in disgust after watching the Progressiver-Than-Thous proudly and successfully do the neocons' dirty work for them yet again, as they had done in 2000 and 2004. I was tired of trying to find a little political discussion only to find everyone pushing Obama-flavored Kool-Aid at me. (But it's not a cult! They merely think he's the Messiah, come to save the faithful from the approaching apocalypse, and that heathen nonbelievers must be stoned--that's all. Totally not a cult. That'd be, you know, crazy.)

That's when I found a forgotten bookmark linking to a NBFH article from the pre-purge days when we really were all Dems, even if some of us wouldn't vote for anyone but Nader, screw the consequences. I rediscovered NBFH and that was the first step back into sunlight.

Then, through you, I've discovered Anglachel's Journal, which is, if I may be so gross, practically fapping material to me. And now, Reclusive Leftist, with a growing blogroll that doesn't make me physically ill, a list of progressive liberals who are actually progressive, and not "Progressives" who are just closet fascists and wind-sock libertarians who are faking it.

I just wanted to say thank you for that.

Not to rain on a great idea - I'd love to see Obama make the ERA a campaign issue and I'd love to see it pass finally - but wasn't there some kind of time limit that passed a couple of years ago for ratification? It may well be that I am misremembering and I hope I am....off to check!

Dunno.

If the time has expired, then start the whole process over again, and complete it. Presumably the states that once ratified will re-ratify. Not so hard to get the last 3. Bingo.

Less hysteria these days about about unisex bathroom

If McCain came out against it, then he becomes the identified sexist pig, while Obama looks heavenly progressive. Win-win.

Well it's the great opportunity for Obama to fight for justice. It's just a matter of 3 states, if he gets this done he will be a winner.

Equal rights for LGBT people, their families, and all women. Including the 1149 marriage rights and protections that heterosexual couples and their children enjoy. Allow LGBT soldiers to not have to hide or lie from witch hunts, but to serve openly and be able to be met by their loving partners when they return home from duty. To allow female soldiers to be able to get abortions easily ESPECIALLY with all the rapes committed by fellow soldiers. We must make it safer for females.
